Hair straightening is a hair styling technique which involves the flattening and straightening of hair in order to give it a smooth and streamlined. There are a few ways to straighten hair, accomplished by using a hair iron or hot comb, chemical relaxers, Japanese hair straightening, or Brazilian hair straightening. In addition, some shampoos, conditioners and hair gels can help make hair temporarily straight. Hair irons and hot combs can only temporarily modify hair texture, whereas relaxers and the other methods permanently alter the structure of the hair, although new hair growth is not affected. The drug interferon alpha has been reported as being shown to modify hair follicles causing permanent change in a person’s hair texture.

There are four ways to straighten hair: Hair relaxers, hair straightening irons, hair rebonding and natural hair straightener:

Hair Relaxer

A relaxer is a type of lotion or cream generally used by people with curly-textured hair, which makes hair less tangled and also easier to straighten by chemically “relaxing” the curls. The active agent is usually a strong alkali, although some formulations are based on ammonium thioglycolate instead.

Straightening Irons

Straightening irons are tools used to change the structure of the hair using heat. Straightening irons work by breaking down the hair’s hydrogen bonds found in the hair’s cortex, which cause hair to bend and become curly. Once the bonds are broken, hair is prevented from holding its original, natural form, though the hydrogen bonds can re-form if exposed to moisture. Risks from straightening irons include scalp burning, surface burns, hair breakage and thinning hair.

Hair Rebonding

Rebonding is a chemical hair treatment. It is a permanent and expensive procedure. Prices for the rebonding treatment may vary across salons due to products used, hair type and post treatment care. Hair rebonding is done by applying a chemical straightening solution and ironing the hair. Since Rebonding uses strong chemical solutions, there is a lot of permanent hair damage and (because of a high concentration of formaldehyde) a high risk of respiratory problems and cancer. For that reason hair rebonding is considered a harmful hair straightening treatment.

Natural Hair Straightener

Natural hair straightening formulas contains no chemicals. They not only straighten hair, but also protects and nourishes it. They works well on highlighted and bleached hair and gives a permanent and stunning straight black hair. The formula is suitable for all hair types and transforms any curly frizzy hair into permanently straighten hair. This type of hair straightening kit is easy to use and can be used from home. A natural hair straightener is a 100% natural formula, made with herbs and minerals which make the hair straightening process safe and revitalizing.

Conclusion: As far as straighteners for hair, Hair relaxers gives temporary and not full solution. Straightening irons give a little better affect, but need constant treatment and cause some loss of hair. While hair rebonding can give a perfect straight hair, health issues caused by heavy use of chemicals makes it a risky treatment at best. Natural hair straightening methods are both safe and give a perfect result. The only con in using them is that the treated hair stays permanently black.
